"
I and the Father are one.
— John 10:30 (ESV)
Lesson Overview
He Left No Room for "Just a Good Teacher"
Jesus didn't hint that He might be God. He said it plainly, repeatedly, and in front of people who understood exactly what He meant. The people who wanted Him killed understood His claims better than people today who try to soften them. He is either who He said He is — or the greatest liar in history.
Three Ways He Made the Claim
🗣️
He Said It Directly
"I and the Father are one."
🤫
He Never Corrected It
When others called Him God, He accepted it
⚖️
It Got Him Killed
"He claimed to be the Son of God" — John 19:7
✅
He Confirmed It Under Oath
Matthew 26:63–64 — before the high priest
Key Passages
John 10:30–33
"I and the Father are one." The Jews picked up stones again to stone him… "You, being a man, make yourself God."
The crowd understood Him perfectly. They didn't say "that's a nice metaphor." They picked up stones. Their response proves the claim was unmistakable.
→ His enemies understood His claims better than those who dismiss them today.
John 5:18
"…he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God."
This is why they wanted to kill Him. Not for performing miracles. Not for healing. For claiming to be equal with God.
→ They tried to kill Him because of the claim — and He didn't take it back.
Matthew 26:63–64
"I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God." Jesus replied, "You have said so."
Under oath. On trial. With His life on the line. He could have said "No, you've misunderstood me." He didn't. He confirmed it — and was sentenced to death for it.
→ He confirmed the claim when denying it would have saved His life.
Matthew 16:16–17
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon… for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven."
When Peter called Him the Son of God, Jesus didn't correct him — He praised him for it and said this insight came from God the Father Himself.
→ He didn't just accept the title — He said the Father revealed it.
Big Idea
C.S. Lewis was right: Jesus is Lord, liar, or lunatic. A merely good teacher does not claim to be God. If His claims are true, they demand everything. If they're false, He's not a good teacher at all. There is no comfortable middle option.
Takeaways
Living It Out
•
Don't soften His words. Take them at face value — that's what the people who heard Him did.
•
If He is God, then everything He says deserves total trust and obedience — not just the parts that are convenient.
•
His claim is either true or it's the most dangerous lie in history. Pick one.
I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
