Jesus Was Fully Man
The Humanity of Christ
Doctrine Series· John 1:14· April 4, 2024
"
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
— John 1:14 (ESV)
Lesson Overview
Not a Spirit in Disguise

Jesus was not God pretending to be human. He was fully God and fully man at the same time. He was born, got hungry, got tired, felt grief, grew in wisdom, and died. This matters enormously — because everything He did for us depended on Him being genuinely one of us.

Why It Had to Be This Way
Hebrews 2:17
"He had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people."

To represent us, He had to be one of us. To die for us, He had to be able to die. To be our mediator between us and God, He had to be able to stand on both sides. His humanity wasn't a limitation — it was the mission.

→ He didn't watch our suffering from a distance. He entered it.
Hebrews 4:15
"We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin."

Tempted in every way — but without sin. That's the key. He experienced all of it: hunger, rejection, grief, pressure, fear — and never broke. His perfect obedience as a human being is what He now offers in our place.

→ Jesus knows what it feels like to be you — and He stayed faithful anyway.

Big Idea
The incarnation means God didn't watch our pain from the outside. He stepped inside it. He knows hunger. He knows grief. He knows temptation. And because He stayed faithful through all of it, His obedience can now cover our failure.
Takeaways
Living It Out
•
When you're struggling, remember: Jesus knows what it feels like to be in a body. He's not distant from your experience.
•
His obedience as a man is what covers your disobedience. That's the gospel.
•
Follow Him as a human example — not just as God giving commands from heaven.
